Under 14s v Canterbury Eagles FC
By Mike Couzens
Great performance to end the season
Whitstable waited until the final match of the season to put in a performance which showed why the first two months of the season had such hope and expectation. The pre-match downpour stopped shortly before kick off but left the surface with some zip, despite the slightly long grass.
For the first 10 minutes Eagles barely touched the ball with Whitstable playing some fantastic, controlled passing football. Just when it looked as though the Eagles goal had a force field around it Kobey Love produced a lovely lobbed pass to put Stanley Griffiths
clear in the box. With time to look up Stan made no mistake and opened the scoring. With the central midfield three of Callum Hosking
, Tom Farley and the outstanding George Baughan
in total control, the rest of the first half continued along the same theme. Whitstable created a host of chances with wing backs Harvey Baughan
and Jacob Couzens
providing attacking width and putting some dangerous crosses into the Eagles box. Despite their domination Whitstable had a scare towards the end of the half when a through ball gave the Eagles forward a chance which he put past Theo Bentley-Hussey
in the Whitstable goal but, fortunately for the reds, also past the post.
In the second half there was a ten-minute spell when Whitstable's intensity, understandably, dropped away and the Eagles saw more of the ball. This didn't translate into goal chances as the back three of Oscar Leggett
, Alfie Brown
and the superb Hamish Dickson
mopped-up any trouble with ease. Stan Griffiths notched his second, latching onto a quick throw by Jacob Couzens
, in the 42nd minute to allow Whitstable to relax a little. The two substitutes - Herbert Dunn
and Ben Burgess
- both had an impact on the game. Herbert's all-action style increased the pace of the game with his speed, determination, tackling and dribbling. Ben closed the game down for Whitstable in the 61st minute, calmly slotting home the third goal.
Canterbury Eagles worked hard throughout the match but, in truth, they were completely outclassed by a Whitstable side putting in an excellent performance across the whole team. It's fair to say the coaches were delighted with the overall performance, with everyone at the top of their game.
